Associate Communication and Retention Strategies

Communication is an art, it takes practice, finesse, and a real understanding of your audience to communicate effectively. And yet, there are also some tried and true strategies that place communication in the realm of science, as something we can create rules around and quantify. While there are different kinds of communication and a variety of mediums to choose from, they all have different results. So, how can we be sure we’re using the right type of communication in our warehouses?

Understanding the purpose for your communication is a great place to start. Your goals may include:

  • Explaining expectations
  • Keeping people informed, for example, policy changes, performance summaries, upcoming events, etc.
  • Educating
  • Recognizing
  • Addressing concerns – suggestion boxes

There are also a variety of mediums that work for different communication tactics, which include:

  • Daily Stand-up Meetings
  • Monthly Department Meetings
  • Quarterly All Hands
  • Employee Newsletters
  • Employee Bulletin Boards
  • Employee Surveys
  • Open Door Policy/ Office hours
  • Gemba Walks

It’s also important to be consistent in your communications, determine who should be delivering the message, what cadence you want to adhere to, where communication takes place, and ways to audit your communication to learn whether it is effective or not.
